The apartment is located in a typical 1960’s Athenian apartment building in the center of Athens and was recently redesigned in order to shelter the architectural and artistic activities of Panagiotis Papanikolaou. The plan is organized in a way where the more public spaces such as the meeting room and the office are placed in the front part of the apartment, overlooking the street, whereas the painting atelier is placed in the back part of the apartment, overlooking the shared courtyard, in order to ensure the necessary privacy and calmness.
One of the basic design principles was the creation of a simple space, with emphasis on natural materials, that acts as a white canvas for the architectural and artistic work of the owner. All hardwood floors were restored, gaining a second life, while the old and ruined terrazzo floors were replaced with cement tiles, thus becoming a contemporary and subtle reference to the urban environment of the area. Lastly, all woodwork and custom furniture from birch plywood work in harmony with the space’s desired clarity and white palette.
